Can we stop having story lines in movies where there’s a fat girl and she’s treated like shit until she gets ‘hot’ aka loses weight and suddenly she’s the girl everyone wants. Because that shit told me as a teenager and a kid that i’d only be attractive or liked or treated with human decency if I lost weight. It also encouraged people to tell me i’d be prettier if I lost weight and to treat me like shit because its okay as long as your fat. Not only does it tell fat people that they’re not worthy of respect, but it also tells people who aren’t fat that fat people aren’t worthy of respect.
People can be attractive, loved, appreciated etc. while fat. People can be fat and in relationships. People can be fat and popular. Stop being cowards and make movies with fat leads that aren’t the butt of a joke or the before of a transformation because I and people like me do not need to be told that we’re the before of every make over movie, the girl or boy that gets used as a bet or a joke in a teen movie, that we have to change to be liked or even treated with respect.
Fat people deserve respect. Fat people shouldn’t have to see films or be told that to get respect we have to lose weight. Fat people shouldn’t have to feel like they’re unlovable or disgusting because we’re constantly shown imagery, films, tv, etc. that confirms what bullies and shitty people tell us. They’re the sort of films that told a 14 year old boy he was allowed to grab my fat on the street and laugh at me. The type of films that told family members that I needed to lose weight to be pretty. Media has a impact and the way people are represented matters.
Stop it with the shitty fat shaming story lines.
